Dr. Joyner was born and raised in Raleigh, N.C. He comes from a family involved in NC history, law and politics. He received his undergraduate degree from UNC in 1982. He completed his medical school degree at UNC in 1986. Following medical school graduation he completed one year of Internal Medicine at NC Memorial Hospital then completed his residency in Ophthalmology at UNC. He received his American Board of Ophthalmology certification in 1991.
Dr. Joyner has been in private practice since July 1990 upon assuming the practice of Dr. David Jones. During this time he has also found ways to help the underserved of Wake County. He helped co-found and staff the Wake Medical Center Eye clinic which ran for nearly 10 years. Currently, he donates time each month to the Urban Ministries Open Door clinic and the Alliance Medical Ministries clinic.
