Raleigh Eye Center is a premier, privately owned ophthalmology practice made up of experienced and caring eye care professionals. A HISTORY OF QUALITY EYE CARE

Our roots run deep throughout the history of quality eye care in North Carolina. Our history begins with Vonnie M. Hicks Sr., M.D., who received his medical degree in 1918 and joined a small group of physicians in downtown Raleigh in 1922 at the Citizens National bank building on Fayetteville Street. The small practice had an important role in eye care in North Carolina in the early and mid-to-late 1900s and began to grow in size. Vonnie M. Hicks Jr., M.D., who took over his father’s practice in 1952, welcomed William W. Foster, M.D. to join his practice in 1976, and continued the family tradition until his death in 1979. Raleigh Eye Center was founded with the arrival of James W. Kiley, M.D. in 1980 and R. Jeffrey Board, M.D. in 1984. Raleigh Eye Center maintains its reputation in North Carolina as the largest privately owned comprehensive ophthalmology practice in Raleigh. As we look to the future, Raleigh Eye Center continues to add new talented and highly trained physicians to provide the best possible eye care to its patients.
