The Raleigh Eye Center's roots run deep in the history of quality eye care in North Carolina. Starting with Vonnie M. Hicks Sr., MD who received his Medical degree in 1918 and began the first medical practice in North Carolina dedicated to ophthalmic care; to Vonnie M. Hicks Jr., MD who took over his father's practice in 1952, welcomed Dr. William W. Foster to join him in practice in 1976, and continued the family tradition until his death in 1979. Soon afterwards the small practice that had been such an important part of eye care in North Carolina in the early and mid to late 1900's began to grow in size and became The Raleigh Eye Center with the arrival of James W. Kiley, MD in 1980 and R. Jeffrey Board, MD in 1984.
