At Raleigh Eye Center, we are proud to provide patients with the leading ophthalmologists throughout the NC Triangle. Using the latest techniques and state-of-the-art equipment and technologies, corrective eye surgeries are our specialty, including strabismus treatment in Raleigh, NC. Strabismus, commonly called “crossed eyes,” is estimated to affect 4% of the U.S. population.
Strabismus, also called heterotropia, is the misalignment or wandering of one or both eyes, or a deviation of an eye due to extra ocular muscle function. While strabismus is most commonly seen in children, adults may also have strabismus left over from childhood or develop it later in life. There are four types of strabismus, determined by what direction the eyes are misaligned:
Esotropia (inward)
Exotropia (outward)
Hypertropia (up)
Hypotropia (down)
Strabismus can be caused by weak of palsied cranial nerves that are responsible for eye movement. Symptoms of strabismus often include seeing double or having trouble with your general vision. Strabismus sometimes turns into amblyopia or “lazy eye,” or permanent loss of sight if left untreated. If you or a family member notices signs of strabismus, it is important that you contact our pediatric eye doctors and optometrists for an eye appointment.
The eye doctors at Raleigh Eye Center are experienced in several treatments and eye muscle surgeries, including those that correct strabismus. We provide individualized treatment plans that are based on the patient and type of strabismus. Our pediatric eye care and ophthalmology center offers the following strabismus treatments in Raleigh:
